About us

Phil Grota has played wind instruments for over 30 years, studying flute, and then saxophone and clarinet. He has studied classical music initially before 'catching fire' on jazz. While he studied flute with Bernard Birnbaum and Rita Linard, he has studied saxophone with Morgan King, Tim McWright and Rich Oppenheim.

Phil's Friends are many of the well known players on keyboard, upright or electric bass and drums. He uses many of the local players in the San Antonio area such as: Bob Shoaf, Kevin Hess, Chuck Moses, Greg Norris many others. He has played jazz for over 10 years with different groups of players, and knows many of these players that long.

Phil Grota and Friends is a jazz group where all of the players read music and tune selections can be based on what the event, reception, party, or restaurant calls for:
bossa nova, swing, pop tune in a jazz style or New Orleans. The number of players are also selected based on what is requested and so can be a duo, trio or quartet.

The fact that there are different wind instruments that can be played and different jazz styles, it adds more variety to the musical sets that are performed. Music sets are usually 45 minutes of playing and 15 minute break.

Phil Grota and Friends jazz ensemble can play: parties, wedding receptions, social events, car shows, wineries, restaurants, and other celebratory functions.
